Post Fire Do's and Dont's

9/2/2022 (Permalink)

Once you have gotten over the shock of a house fire, we want to leave you with a couple of tips that will help out your situation.

What Not to Do After a House Fire

  • Do not enter your home until you’re given permission that it is safe.
  • Do not turn on gas, water or electric utilities until a professional has deemed them safe.
  • Do not start or move your vehicle if it has been damaged.
  • Do not try to clean any of the smoke or soot damage yourself. Leave that to professionals who have the proper safety equipment and experience.

What to Do After a House Fire

  • Get permission from Fire Department officials before you re-enter the fire-damaged structure.
  • Contact family members and loved ones to inform them of the accident.
  • Attend to frightened pets and ensure their safety and comfort.
  • Call all utility providers (electric, gas, water) and inform them of the fire.
  • Call your homeowners insurance company to begin the claim process.
  • Call the professionals at SERVPRO to help get the fire mitigation and restoration process started. We are available 24/7/365.

How to Help Mitigate Mold Growth

7/1/2022 (Permalink)

Until help arrives, there are a few things that you can do to help mitigate the impact of mold grown on your property. We only recommend the following if you feel confident in safely accomplishing the tasks.

  1. Avoid touching or disturbing what you believe is mold growth. This includes attempts to clean the area. Do not attempt to clean or treat affected surfaces. Improper cleaning can spread mold spores throughout the space, potentially creating bigger problems. Additionally, visual inspection is one way we determine severity, so we would like to see potential mold undisturbed.
  2. Limit the airflow in the affected area by turning off ceiling fans, portable fans, and HVAC systems. Minimize the air moving across surfaces that may have mold.
  3. If possible, close doors to the affected area and stay out of the area.

Once we arrive, we'll help you assess the situation further. If you think you may submit a claim to your insurance company, you are encouraged to locate information such as your policy number and your insurance company's claim phone number if you haven't already. Our highest priority is serving you. We have decades of experience working with property owners and insurance providers, and we strive to ensure both you and your insurance company have everything you need to process your claim.

If you suspect mold in your residential or commercial property, give us a call at 231-564-4014 to find out how SERVPRO of Bellaire, Kalkaska, Lake City & Grayling can help you!

July Fire Safety Tips

7/1/2022 (Permalink)

Summer is synonymous with barbecues, parades, and firework displays; but along with all the festivities are plenty of visits to the emergency room-especially during the month of July.

Each year, around 230 people are injured badly enough to require medical treatment after firework related incidents, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. In addition to causing injury, fireworks are also responsible for thousands of house fires each year with millions of dollars in property damage.

There is nothing like firing up the grill during the summer months! Did you know, July is the peak month for grill fires? A backyard barbecue can become dangerous quickly if proper safety precautions aren't considered. SERVPRO of Bellaire, Kalkaska, Lake City & Grayling wants you to have an enjoyable and safe summer. Consider the following tips to help ensure your summer celebrations are disaster free.

  • Propane and charcoal barbecue grills should only be used outdoors.
  • The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging brochures.
  • Keep children and pets away from grill area.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grill and in trays below the grill.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.
  • When using a charcoal grill, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container.
  • Anyone using fireworks or standing nearby should wear protective eyewear.
  • Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Keep a buck of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that don't go off or in case of fire. Children should never pickup fireworks that may be left over as they may still be active.
  • The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public display conducted by trained professionals.

Tornado Preparation

6/10/2022 (Permalink)

As we have just learned in our very own Gaylord community, tornadoes can quickly devastate communities. Turning lives upside down, destroying buildings and homes, while producing deadly flying debris. Tornadoes are nothing to mess around with and it is crucial to act quickly if one comes through your area. Here are some tips to prepare for tornadoes in Northern Michigan:

Under a tornado warning? Find shelter immediately:

  • Stay away from windows, outside walls, and doors.
  • Find a safe and sturdy building.
  • Stay in a low and flat location.
  • It is best to go into a basement or storm cellar.
  • If you do not have a basement, go to a small interior room on the lowest level (avoiding windows).
  • Use your arms to protect your head and neck.
  • Watch for flying debris.

How to prepare:

  • Know your area’s tornado risk.
  • Sign up for your community’s warning system.
  • Know the signs of a tornado.
    • Funnel cloud.
    • Cloud of debris.
    • Loud roar like a freight train.
    • High speed winds.
  • Pay close attention to weather reports.
  • Choose a safe place and practice going there with your family to prepare.
  • Always keep a safe distance away from others in your safe shelter.

What to do during:

  • Go to your safe shelter immediately.
  • Do not try to outrun a tornado in your car.
  • Cover your head and neck for extra protection.
  • Listen to your local alert systems for current emergency information. You can also listen to EAS and NOAA Weather Radio for information.
  • If you happen to be outside or in your car, cover your arms and body with a coat or blanket.

What to do after:

  • Continue listening to your local alert system, EAS or NOAA Weather Radio for updates.
  • If you happen to be trapped, cover your mouth with a cloth or mask to avoid breathing dust.
  • Do not enter damaged buildings until they are safe.
  • Save your phone calls for emergencies.
  • Stay clear of fallen power lines.

How to Safely Extinguish a Grease Fire

6/10/2022 (Permalink)

Pictured is a pan that has caught on fire. We are here to help with any of your kitchen fire cleanup needs!

One of the greatest joys in life is a nice homecooked meal. However, that joy can quickly change to fear when facing a fire. Regardless of your experience in the kitchen, a fire can happen to anyone at any time. As a result, everyone needs to be familiar with the process of extinguishing one. The following is a step-by-step guide to putting out a grease fire in your home:

1. Eliminate the heat source. The first step you need to take is removing the heat source by turning your burner off or unplugging the stove. This will help keep the fire from getting out of control. Be sure to wear oven mitts to avoid burns.

2. Smother the flames. The best method for eliminating a stovetop or oven fire is to smother it by putting a lid over the pan. This quickly cuts off the oxygen supply. Make sure to use a lid that is not made of glass, as the intense heat can cause it to shatter. Another option is to use baking soda and pour a generous quantity on the fire. If you own a fire extinguisher, you can use this as a third option. Never use water on a grease fire, as oil and water do not mix, and this can cause an explosion.

3. Call 911. If the above steps do not eliminate the fire, or if it spreads, call 911 immediately and evacuate everyone in the residence. Do not stay and continue to attempt to put out the fire; your life is much more important.

Dealing with a grease fire in your home is a terrifying experience. By arming yourself with the knowledge of how to properly handle one before it starts, you can get it under control and prevent too much damage from occurring. Afterward, fire restoration services can help you with fire cleanup and assess any damage.

What to Do Until Help Arrives (Water Damage)

6/10/2022 (Permalink)

Pictured is a flooded room with a couch in the middle. We are here to help with any of your water damage cleanup needs!

Until help arrives, there are a few things that you can do to help mitigate the damage to your property; however, you are encouraged to only attempt tasks that you feel confident that you can safely accomplish.

  1. Shut off the source of water if possible. If you don't feel confident doing this yourself, consider contacting someone to help stop the water source, such as a plumber. If you are uncertain where the water is coming from, don't stress; we'll assist you with determining the source when we arrive.
  2. Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum.
  3. Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove rugs that may be on wet carpet. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
  4. Avoid using electric or electronic items that may have come in contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else in the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.

Different Types of Household Water Damages

5/13/2022 (Permalink)

Pictured is a floor with a water damage situation We are here to help with all of your water damage needs!

Flooding is usually caused by rain or snow melting on top of impermeable surfaces like roofs and sidewalks, which causes these rare events when the water spills into basements or crawlspaces. Water can find its way into your home through cracks in foundation walls, gaps in utility lines, or leaky windows and doors. If you do not take pre-emptive measures to prevent flooding, you are putting your home at risk of lasting damage that can lead to significant expenses down the road. Here are some examples of flooding that can happen in homes:

1. Sewer Flooding

Flooding your basement can prove disastrous. Water might force its way into your basement through improper drainage or sewer lines that have become clogged. You have to be wary of possible damage to your pipes and appliances, such as water damage from broken pipes, rotted wood, and mold. Sewer flooding is more common in older homes with faulty septic systems or no septic system at all. This kind of flooding can often be prevented by scheduling regular maintenance on your septic system.

2. Rainwater Damage

Rain Water Damage also causes flooding in homes, particularly in areas with very heavy rainfall. Heavy rainfalls can lead to water seeping into foundations and walls, leading to a host of problems like mold, mildew, decay, and structural damage to your home. Overflowing gutters or faulty downspouts are usually the culprits of this kind of water damage. To avoid this type of flooding, make sure to clean out your gutters regularly, and have a rain gutter installation professional check for any possible damage.

3. Basement Flooding

Basement flooding usually occurs when water seeps through an area not properly waterproofed or drained, such as a gap in the foundation wall or roof, a leaky basement window, or an improperly installed sump pump. Water can also get into your basement through your toilet tank and pipes. The damage of basement flooding can be extensive. It can ruin your basement and its contents, plus do damage to other areas of your home. Basement flooding often requires expensive repairs that may be difficult to afford.

4. Water Intrusion

Water intrusion can be caused by a leaky sump pump or drain pipe that has become clogged with debris. Water can also find its way into your home through a small gap between the base of the foundation wall and the ground. This type of flooding is usually caused by poor drainage or overcrowding in your basement. Water intrusion can also take place during heavy building rainfalls.

Flooding can be devastating to your home. If your home has suffered any kind of water damage, SERVPRO of Bellaire, Kalkaska, Lake City & Grayling is here to help!

Technology Storm Prep

4/29/2022 (Permalink)

Technology can now be a vital tool in preparing for emergencies or disasters, as well as during or after to stay informed of the situation and to be in communication with others. From common technology you already use on a daily basis to taking a few extra steps to prepare, the following tips will help you be ready in the event of an emergency.

There are many places to store important information securely online. Services like Google Drive or Dropbox offer free ways to store different types of files, like medical records and identification documents.

Stay informed by following agencies such as FEMA, local news channels, and local government on Twitter and Facebook for the most up-to-date information in a disaster situation. You can also alert first responders if a rescue is needed. The American Red Cross offers Safe & Well check-in sites to list yourself as safe or find family and friends in situations where communication is difficult to establish. Facebook also has a feature called Safety Check that becomes activated after natural disasters or a crisis. You will receive a notification from Facebook directly if you're located in the affected area at that time.

Make sure your contact information is updated in your phone and e-mail for communicating with family, friends, business contacts and others whom you may need to get in contact with before, during, or after a disaster. Keep a portable charger in your car and home in case of an emergency. You may need to recharge this form from time to time, but you can also buy solar-powered chargers as well. Put help in the palm of your hand by adding your local SERVPRO franchise to your personal and work phones. Your local franchise professionals are "Ready for whatever happens."

Carpet Cleaning Tips

3/30/2022 (Permalink)

Pictured are Servpro technicians performing a carpet cleaning. We are here to help with any of your carpet cleaning needs!

SERVPRO recommends that you vacuum your carpets regularly and have them fully cleaned on a consistent basis before they start appearing dirty. Dirt builds up in layers, and when carpet visibly looks dirty, you're actually only seeing the dirt at the tips of the carpet fibers. If you wait until your carpets look dirty to have them cleaned, they may not be able to be restored to their original condition. That's why you should vacuum often!

The frequency of carpet cleaning depends on several factors. Carpets in homes without children, pets or smokers should be cleaned every six to 12 months. Carpet in homes with children, pets or where smoking is occurring need to be cleaned more often; every three to six months.

If you have any tough to remove stains or are in need of a professional carpet cleaning, give us a call at 231-564-4014

Eliminating Water Damage Odors

3/21/2022 (Permalink)

If you have recently experienced a water damage in your home, you may notice lingering smells. Musty, heavy smells are unpleasant for residents, and if the smell is the result of an active mold or mildew infestation it could pose a serious health risk as well. With this in mind, knowing how to eliminate water damage odor, becomes imperative.

Dry the Affected Area

The first item to check off the list, is making sure that your house is completely dry. Of course you make sure the damaged area gets totally dried, but don’t forget to check your home for other sources of moisture. Kitchens, bathrooms, and the corners of basements are all common areas for the mold that causes water damage odor to grow. Dehumidifiers and air-moving fans will be necessary tools so you can dry out any moisture that you find in your home. If the water and/or dampness doesn’t seem to be receding, you should consult us at SERVPRO. Professional, quality air-moving fans and dehumidifiers pack a much bigger punch than their residential counterparts.

Combat the Mold

After you’ve dried up all moisture in your house, begin ridding your home of any mold that has grown. Mold does present a health concern for humans and pets. Mold releases spores that can cause health effects. Additionally, bacteria feast on the waste that mold produces. This can weaken the structure of your home and causes a lot of the water damage odor that troubles homeowners. If the mold damage is too severe for you to take care of or handle, give the mold professionals a call at 231-564-4014.

Don’t Mask Water Damage Odor

If you have an issue with water damage odor that has resisted your attempts to clean it up, don’t settle for masking it. Masking the smell may prevent the unpleasant odor, but won’t stop any health risks that mold and mildew pose. If smell seems to be lingering, it’s more likely that there’s some water damage you haven’t found yet. A professional water damage restoration company like SERVPRO will be able to find any hidden water damage and get to the bottom of the odor. Ignoring this problem won’t make it go away: mildew, mold, and water damage odor only gets worse.

Know What to Do

Knowing how to eliminate water damage odor is important to you as a homeowner. Never ignore musty smells that come from water damage, and don’t try to mask them either. Make sure you dry up any moisture found in your home, as this helps to stop mold growth. You can use dehumidifiers and air-moving fans to help dry up moisture in your home. If you need help, call your local SERVPRO water damage experts at 231-564-4014!

Flood Types

3/18/2022 (Permalink)

Pictured is a house that is surrounded by resulting flood water. We are here to help with any of your post-flood cleanup needs!

Floods are the most common natural disaster in the United States, according to Ready.gov. Failing to evacuate a flooded area or entering flood waters can often lead to serious injury or possibly even death. Floods cause billions of dollars worth of residential and commercial property damage each year. Since floods can damage any property in almost any area, it is crucial to learn how floods form, the various types of floods there are, and how they can affect your property.

Flash floods are fast-moving waters that sweep everything in their path. They are caused by heavy rainfall or rapid snow thaw. Flash floods usually cover a relatively small area and occur with little to no notice, generally less than six hours. The rapid water torrents can move large objects like cars, rocks, and trees.

Coastal floods are caused by strong winds or storms that move towards a coast during high tide. When powerful waves breach the coast's dune the area is usually flooded. Coastal regions with fewer defenses and lower elevations are the most affected. The best time to repair a breach is during low tide.

River floods are characterized by gradual riverbank overflows caused by extensive rainfall over an extended period of time. The areas covered by river floods depend on the size of the river and the amount of precipitation.

Urban floods occur when the drainage system in a city or town fails to absorb the water from heavy rain. The lack of natural drainage in an urban area can also contribute to flooding. Water flows out into the street, making driving very dangerous. Although water levels can be just a few inches deep, urban floods can cause significant structural damage.

Pluvial floods form in flat areas where the terrain cannot absorb the rainwater, causing puddles and ponds to form. Pluvial flooding is similar to urban flooding, but mainly in rural areas. The agricultural activities and properties in areas where pluvial floods have occurred can also be seriously affected.

Flooding can cause severe damage to residential and commercial properties, but there are many
ways to prepare and prevent it! If your residential or commercial property suffers from flood damage, give us a call at 231-564-4014 to help you out in your time of need!

What Happens When There’s Water in My Crawl Space?

3/18/2022 (Permalink)

Pictured is a crawlspace that someone in the corner with a flashlight is inspecting. If you notice any water or mold in your crawlspace, give the experts a call at 231-564-4014!

Your home’s crawl space is often a neglected part of the house. In fact, you might not check it regularly. With this part of homes often going neglected, water can build up in your crawl space without your knowledge. This happens because the ground gets wet and dry through the seasons that can cause moisture in your crawl space.

What Happens When a Crawl Space Is Wet

There are three ways water gets into a crawl space; a leak, water seepage from the soil, or condensation. When there are puddles of water in the crawl space, you should address them right away. Even though the water itself won’t damage your home, the water vapor that comes with it will. Moisture can cause rot, energy loss, and even attract pests to your home.

Here are some of the major problems you’ll experience when you have a wet crawl space:

  • High Energy Bills: Having a crawl space means you have more space to heat and cool. However, when there’s wetness inside, the damp air will take more energy to heat or cool. With that said, you’ll use more energy which will translate into higher energy bills.
  • Mold: Undeniably, mold loves moisture, and it feeds on dead organic materials, such as paper, wood, and cardboard. When there’s mold in your crawl space, it will release airborne spores that can make their way upstairs. The spores aren’t good for your health and can cause health effects, while also having a detrimental effect on your property value.
  • Dust Mites and Pests: Dust mites love humid environments, which means they would love to be in your dirt crawl space. They can float in the air and trigger allergies and asthma. Dust mites can also attract pests, such as termites, mice, rats, and even snakes.

Fix Your Crawl Space Problem

The most important thing you should do to fix your crawl space problem is to first understand where the water is coming from. Surface water that gets into the space comes from roof drainage, overflowing gutters, grading issues, or leaky basement windows.

Another reason there’s water in your crawl space is groundwater. The soil that’s surrounding the foundation can be saturated after periods of heavy rain or snow. Finally, issues with your plumbing can also cause water into your crawl space.

Always Keep It Dry

When you have identified the reasons water gets into the crawl space, you’ll be able to find ways to keep it dry. For one, a dehumidifier and sump pump system can prevent water and moisture damage.

Now, if your crawl space leaks when it rains, you need to get it under control. The main goal here is to get rid of humidity in the crawl space to prevent moisture.

Conclusion

Water in your crawl space can be a huge problem if you don’t address it immediately. That’s why it’s a good idea to have regular inspections to ensure that everything’s well. In the case that you notice moisture in your crawl space, call SERVPRO at 231-564-4014 right away before it creates more issues that can be costly.

Flood Preparation Tips

3/8/2022 (Permalink)

Sometimes floods develop slowly, and forecasters can anticipate where a flood will happen days or weeks before it occurs. However, flash floods can occur within minutes and sometimes without any sign of rain at all. Being prepared can save your life and give you peace of mind.

If you have access to sandbags or other materials, use them to protect your home from flood waters if you have sufficient time to do so.

Have a professional install check-valves in your plumbing to prevent flood waters from backing up into the drains of your home. Make sure your electric circuit, breakers, or fuses are clearly marked for each area of your home. Be safe!

Give us a call at 231-564-4014 if you experience any kind of flood damage!

Generator Safety Tips

1/25/2022 (Permalink)

Pictured above is a generator with the SERVPRO logo on it. We are here to help with any storm damage needs!

If you have a generator on hand for power outages during storm damages, follow the safety tips below provided by the American Red Cross!

  • Never use a generator, grill, camp stove, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawl space, or any partially enclosed area.
  • To avoid electrocution, keep the generator dry and do not use it in wet conditions. Operate it on a dry surface under an open canopy like structure, such as under a tarp held up on poles. Do not touch the generator with wet hands.
  • Opening doors and windows or using fans will not prevent carbon monoxide (CO) buildup in the home. Although CO can't be seen or smelled, it can rapidly lead to full incapacitation and death. Even if you cannot smell exhaust fumes, you may still be exposed to CO. If you start to feel sick, dizzy, or weak while using a generator, get to fresh air immediately.
  • Install CO alarms in central locations on every level of your home or property and outside of sleeping areas to provide early warnings.

How to Avoid Snow Storm Damages

1/7/2022 (Permalink)

Pictured is someone shoveling snow with the SERVPRO logo on it. We are here 24/7/365 to help with any of your water or storm damage needs!

Typically, you don’t think of floods or basement water damages in the middle of winter. SERVPRO is here to let you know they do exist and happen more than you think. After snow storms with large accumulating amounts of snow, when the snow melts flooding will occur after quick changes in temperature. The temperature change can cause snow to melt and could potentially flood your basement. Basement flooding during the winter is mostly caused by melting snow entering the home because of faulty gutters, cracks in foundations, and improper or blocked runoff.

To illustrate this, ten inches of snow can melt into one inch of water and it is already in and soil. The heavier the snowfall, the more snowmelt. A quick temperature change can cause a significant amount of water on the soil around your home. If the water cannot flow away from your home’s foundation, it can ultimately enter your home and cause water damages or secondary mold damages if left untreated.

Snowmelt flooding can damage the floors, walls, furniture and personal items in your basement. It also introduces moisture and water in your basement which could lead to secondary mold damages.

Snowmelt Safety Tips:

  • Shovel snow away from your home when safe to do so.
  • Keep snow and ice buildup off and away from drainage areas.
  • Inspect basement walls for cracks.
  • Check your roof for ice and snow buildup.
    • Clear snow from your roof to prevent buildups if it accumulates.
    • This could also help you avoid ice dams.
  • Inspect your gutters and downspouts.

For any of your water damage or storm damage needs, SERVPRO is here to help 24/7/365!

Depending on the amount of soot, your local SERVPRO® Franchise Professional may even be able to reduce the cost of recovery by cleaning lighter soot deposits found on some surfaces, eliminating the expense incurred with repainting or refinishing. In other cases, SERVPRO® will clean to “prepare for painting”. This process deodorizes and ensures the new paint will adhere properly to the surface.

Contents Cleaning – All of the restorable contents in affected areas will be professionally cleaned and deodorized. This includes area rugs, furniture, draperies and upholstery. SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals begin by carefully inspecting and testing all fabrics in the structure to determine which cleaning methods are most appropriate. SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals can provide wet or dry cleaning services. Additionally, all the other restorable contents will be cleaned and deodorized to preloss condition. This includes electronics, art, wood furniture, kitchen items, clothing, bedding, bric-a-brac and much more. Finally, SERVPRO® can provide an inventory list of all “to be claimed” items if requested.

Deodorization – SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals provide specialized services that rid your home or place of business of offensive odors left by fire or smoke damage. SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals do not merely cover up lingering odors with a fragrance, they seek out the sources of the odor and remove them. Ask your SERVPRO® Franchise Professional to explain the various deodorization methods available and which will work best for you.

Post Fire Cleanup Professionals

Pictured above is a house that has caught fire with the servpro logo. We are here to help with any of your post fire cleanup and restoration needs!

If you suffer a fire in your home, putting the flames out is just the beginning. As time goes on, the smoke and soot that has accumulated has the potential to cause more damage. To prevent any further damage from occurring, you should contact the professionals at SERVPRO who have the expertise to help prevent any further damage. Every second counts and our professional help will aid in preventing further damage. Many believe that the flames are the only source of damage that occurs during a fire, but the majority comes from smoke, soot, ash, and secondary water damages from putting the fire out. Ash and smoke can cause extensive corrosion, etching, discoloration, and powerful odors around the house. The damage starts with the discoloring of most surfaces. Within minutes, anything that is made of plastic or was close to the fire will start to discolor. Within hours, fiberglass and finishes on any appliances will begin to yellow and metals may tarnish. Within a few days, walls, clothing, and upholstery will permanently discolor, wood and vinyl will need refinishing or replacement, and metals will start corroding. Due to the quick progression of damage that can occur to most of the objects around the house, you’ll need to contact the IICRC-certified professionals at SERVPRO. The soot and dirty water that collects in the home from putting out the fire can contain dangerous bacteria. It’s important to allow the professionals to handle this before re-entering the home. Furthermore, coming into contact with fire damaged materials can be hazardous. Give the professionals at SERVPRO a call if you are in need of any postfire cleanup or restoration!

Circuit Overload

1/4/2022 (Permalink)

Pictured is an outlet that is overloaded which caused a fire to start. We are here to help with any of your fire damage cleanup needs!

Have you ever plugged in too many devices into one outlet at once? Everything at first seemed fine and then all of a sudden, the power goes off. You more than likely created a circuit overload in your home.

All electrical circuits are designed to handle a certain amount of electricity. When you bring in more electricity than a circuit can handle, a circuit overload will occur, potentially causing a fire. According to the National Fire Protection Association, electrical fires are one of the leading causes of structure fire annually. Which is accounted for nearly 13% of reported home fires and results in 420 fatalities, 1,520 injuries and nearly $1.5 billion in property damage.

How can you prevent a potential house fire by an overloaded circuit? Follow the tips below:

  • Never plug more than two devices into an outlet at once.
  • Know the amount of power you are putting on an outlet or circuit.
  • Large appliances like refrigerators and dryers should be plugged into their own outlet since they are heavy power users.
  • If you see that you have been overloading an outlet or circuit in your home, you should consider contacting a professional to help resolve the problem.

If an electrical fire does occur, we are always here to help 24/7/365. We specialize in and are industry leaders in fire and water damage cleanup and restoration. We have extensive fire damage cleanup and restoration training to get your property back to pre-fire condition.

Household Cleaning Tips to Avoid Fires

1/4/2022 (Permalink)

House fires are more common than you may realize, with potential fire starters like dust, laptops and lint traps hiding in plain sight throughout your home. While the thought may never cross your mind, many household items that go misused or uncleaned can be disguised as harmless but ultimately deadly.

Are you guilty of these bad habits that could start an unexpected fire in your home?

Misusing electric blankets: A warm and cozy electric blanket is a undeniable source of comfort in the winter but, it also poses a potential fire hazard. Never allow pets to snuggle on top and do not pile extra covers over the electric blanket. Excessive heat buildup may lead to fire. Never bend the coils, always keep your blanket at its lowest setting and always turn it off in the morning.

Piling up dirty rags: A wood stain may be the perfect finishing touch on a DIY project, but later, that pile of oil-soaked rags you tossed in the corner could trigger the perfect storm. Those rags are a very real fire hazard if left unattended. The rags could oxidize and spontaneously combust, causing a house fire. Two proper ways to dispose of oily rags are to lay them flat outside to dry or to put them in a metal can filled with water and a tight-fitting lid.

Lingering dryer lint: We're sure you know emptying the lint screen increases your dryer’s efficiency, but did you know that lint is flammable? The combination of lint buildup and excessive heat is a recipe for disaster. Make sure to clean the interior of the dryer frame as well as the dryer vent and exhaust duct regularly to clear away lint and clogs and to reduce the risk of fire.

Letting your laptop overheat: If you own a laptop, you know how hot it can get after hours of use. You increase the risk of restricting airflow through the cooling vents when you leave your laptop computer on your bed, rug, chair or other soft flammable surfaces. This can cause your laptop to overheat and possibly catch fire. Keeping your laptop on a desk or table will help prevent fires.

Using too many extension cords: Extension cords are meant to be a temporary response to a lack of electrical outlets; not a permanent solution. The reason for this is that connecting many cords for a significant amount of time causes an overload that will lead to a short circuit - which could start a fire. Hiring a qualified electrician to install additional outlets could help you avoid this problem altogether.

Disregarding dust: Built up dust can be a fire hazard if it collects in and around electrical sockets, electronics and even floor heaters. Vacuuming on a regular basis, especially behind electronics, will significantly reduce the chance of dust particles catching fire.

Improperly storing batteries: Storing 9-volt batteries in your kitchen junk drawer might be putting your home and family at risk. When loose batteries roll around with other metals such as paper clips or screws, the two terminals could short out, possibly generating enough heat to ignite flammables nearby. If storing the batteries in the original package is not an option, place a piece of electrical tape over the terminal to prevent this possibility.

Unwanted guests: Rodents like mice and rats like to chew on electrical wires to control the length of their teeth. Over time, they can remove the sheathing which leaves the wires exposed. The electrical current travelling through the wire generates heat and if the wire is exposed this could lead to sparks and ultimately ignite the surrounding surface. Call an exterminator if you suspect you have rodents.

Forgetting the chimney sweep: There are common causes of chimney fires, such as, dead birds, raccoon nests, cracked mortar and built-up creosote. The National Fire Protection Association recommends a professional chimney sweep at least once a year. Also, when building a fire in your fireplace, never light it with kerosene. Always use an approved fire starter.

Overlooking the range hood: Ovens and cook tops are the most common sources of kitchen fires. But range hoods are also a potential threat. Grease builds up over time and can drip down onto the cook top, possibly starting a fire. These flames could easily reach your cabinets and before you know it your kitchen could be engulfed. Regularly clean and maintain your range hood to keep your kitchen out of harm’s way.

Furniture arrangement: Furniture placed too close to a wood stove could spontaneously ignite. Pyrolysis is the chemical decomposition of a combustible item. This occurs when an object is continually exposed to a heat source and dries out. This leading-yet seldom considered cause of fires does not even require a direct flame. It only takes heat and time.

Post Storm Roof Leaks

12/17/2021 (Permalink)

A major storm in Northern Michigan can do serious damage to many properties, including the roof of your home or business. When it comes to a leaking roof, you will need a professional not only to fix the exterior but to repair your attic and ceilings. A roof leak may seem small, but it can potentially cause severe long term damage to your property.

Here is what you can do once a leak has been discovered:

Check the Roof

If your property has a shingled roof, check for missing shingles. That may give you an idea of how water is getting in. If water is coming through, puncture a small hole that will allow the water to flow out freely. If you leave it intact, water will spread over the ceiling which could cause it to sag and possibly collapse. A hole gives the water somewhere to go. Put a bucket underneath to catch the water and move furniture and other items out of the way.

Move Wet Items

Once belongings are wet, they need to be dried and disinfected. If there are no electrical dangers, launder furniture covers, bedding, and other washable items. Air out and clean furniture and rugs. Check for irreparable damage. If something is in poor condition, throw it away.

Dry Everything Well

From the attic on down, everything needs to be as dry as possible. Run fans or heaters or open windows to get air circulating through the area. Once everything is completely dry, then restoration work for the roof leak begin.

Call SERVPRO

A roof leak can cause substantial damage in hard-to-reach areas. Call the experts to evaluate the safety of your building before you attempt any repairs yourself. It is important to have everything dry and disinfected to prevent future problems. A damaged roof can cause extensive issues for your property. Cleaning up properly after storm damage ensures that you have a safe environment to reside in.

At SERVPRO of Bellaire, Kalkaska, Lake City & Grayling, we are available 24/7 so that when a disaster strikes, we are the experts you can count on!

Winter Water Damages

12/17/2021 (Permalink)

Northern Michigan winters are known to be brutally cold and accompanied by large amounts of snow. With below freezing temperatures, snow, and ice, your home or business could be in jeopardy for water damage. It is crucial that you are aware of the hazards and so you can be proactive in preparing, preventing and acting quickly if faced with any winter water damages.

FROZEN PIPES

A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the backflow pressure between the water source and the blockage. A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly.

ICE DAMS

Ice dams can be a major problem during the winter season. They form when heated air melts roof snow downward into water dammed behind still-frozen ice. When the trapped water cannot safely flow or run into the gutter system, it can backflow under the roof ’s shingles and into the structure’s interior areas.

PREPARE YOUR HOME

  • If you own a home which is unoccupied during a cold period, ensure you have ample heating fuel and that the indoor thermostat, in all areas of the home, is minimally kept at 55 degrees and ensure that you have a trusted person check the home periodically during your absence.
  • Keep cabinet doors open during cold spells. This allows warm air to circulate around pipes.
  • Keep a slow trickle of water flowing through faucets, especially if the pipes for faucets run through unheated or uninsulated areas of your home.
  • Consider shutting off outdoor faucets. Find the shut-off valve in the basement or crawl space and turn it to “off.”
  • If you follow the previous step, then open the outdoor faucet to help ensure it drains completely and the inner valve is shut off.
  • Ensure gutters are clean and secure. Leaves and debris accumulate, causing a damming effect on gutters, which could lead to roof problems and water damage.

PREPARE YOUR BUSINESS

  • Check your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Weather, such as wind, heavy rain, ice, and snow, can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause
    personal injuries.
  • Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential.
  • Inspect all handrails, stairwells, and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.

Cold weather, snow, and ice storms can cause severe damage to your home or business. When these types of disasters strike, immediate action is necessary to prevent additional damage to your property. Our team has the winter storm experience, expertise, and the resources to remediate damage caused by winter weather. If disaster strikes your home or business during the winter months, know that SERVPRO of Bellaire, Kalkaska, Lake City & Grayling has your back.

Limiting Secondary Damages in your Business

12/2/2021 (Permalink)

Pictured is a business that has experienced significant flooding damage with the Servpro logo. Here to help with any of your water or mold damage needs!

A flood or burst pipe can cause significant water damage inside any business. Excessive water exposure can be particularly problematic because moisture is an essential ingredient for black mold growth. To help prevent secondary damage and the need for mold remediation services, it’s essential that the professional restoration crew you hire performs a thorough cleanup that incorporates essential procedures. If your building features tile, you can also complete important maintenance to help reduce the risk of extensive mold contamination.

Removal of Saturated Materials

The cleanup team should promptly remove all wet items from the water damaged area. Because mold is adept at hiding, it’s essential to discard saturated building materials, including the following items:

  • Drywall and baseboards
  • Insulation
  • Carpets

Replacing these components helps eliminate potential undetected moisture zones behind walls and under flooring where mold can proliferate.

Drying the Affected Space

High humidity and condensation can also result in black mold growth. To help prevent this dilemma, it’s essential to maintain adequate air circulation during the cleanup process. Remediation professionals can utilize fans and dehumidifiers to help remove excessive moisture. They can also employ moisture meters to verify the site is dry before installing new insulation, drywall and carpet.

Proactive Tile Care

Tile floors and walls are also susceptible to secondary damage after flooding. Because cement-based grout is porous, it’s important to take proactive measures to help shield tile from water damage.

Unless it’s properly protected, water can penetrate through grout and flood under the tile structure. This can undermine its stability and create an ideal environment for mold proliferation. To help reduce this risk, you should routinely apply sealant to any tile work inside your building.

Effective Strategies

No business owner wants to endure mold remediation. Fortunately, there are a few strategies that both property owners and flood cleanup crews can employ to help reduce the risk of black mold growth and its subsequent damage.

Give us a call anytime at 231-564-4014 to discuss how we can help you with any of your mold or water damage needs!

Decorate Safely

11/30/2021 (Permalink)

Pictured is a Christmas tree that was decorated safely by SERVPRO. Decorate safely this holiday season!

Pretty lights, candles, and decorations are just a few of the items bringing charm and cheer to the holiday season - however, if they are not used carefully, your holidays may go from festive to frightening. The American Red Cross offers the following safety tips to help greatly reduce the fire risk in your home or business this holiday season:

  • Place Christmas trees, candles, and other holiday decorations at least three feet away from heat sources like fireplaces, portable heaters, radiators, heat vents, and candles.
  • Make sure light strings and other holiday decorations are in good condition. Do not use anything with frayed electrical cords and always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Always unplug tree and holiday lights before leaving the property or going to bed.
  • Never use lit candles to decorate a tree. Always extinguish candles before leaving the room or before going to bed.
  • Use only sturdy tree stands designed not to tip over. Keep curious pets and children away from Christmas trees.
  • Keep anything that can catch on fire - like pot holders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, and towels or curtains - away from your stove top.
  • Designate one person to walk around your home or business to ensure all candles and smoking materials are properly extinguished after guests leave.

After the Flood- Ways to Salvage Furniture

11/30/2021 (Permalink)

Pictured is a piece of furniture on blocks to avoid further water damage. Here to help with any of your water or mold damage needs!

A water damage can be devastating. Whether a few inches of water filled your home or the flood was on a large scale, filling your home, once you’re back, you’re faced with the task of salvaging. The good news is that most solid wood furniture can be salvaged after water damage. Here are some simple steps from SERVPRO to follow after a water damage to salvage your furniture:

Take Photos

After any flood, it’s wise to take photos of the damage done to your home for insurance purposes. You can take general photos and then closeup pictures of your furniture and the most damaged areas.

Clean

Flood waters often come along with mud and dirt. Wipe your furniture down with a soft cloth or brush. Try not to rub in the dirt, instead use soft strokes to gently brush dirt away. You may need to use water to get any dirt that’s really stuck on to come off. Then, dry your furniture using a dry cloth.

Dry it Out

You need to try to dry out your furniture as soon as possible. Keep it in a shaded area as the sun can cause the wet wood to crack and warp. If you still have a bit of water in your home or your floors are wet, use bricks or blocks to hold your furniture up off of the floor. You can set up fans or dehumidifiers to help keep the air moving and speed up the drying process. Avoid using any sort of heat (hair dryers, irons) to dry your furniture as this will damage the wood.

To help your furniture dry out more quickly, open any cabinet doors and remove drawers. These may be stuck due to the wood swelling from the water. If they’re stuck, don’t force them out, but check them regularly as the swelling reduces so that you can eventually remove them while drying completes.

Manage Mold and Mildew

Unfortunately, the damp environment created by the flood water is the perfect environment for mold and mildew to grow. Mildew and mold spores are everywhere and begin to take hold whenever they find a nice, moist, warm environment. So, keep an eye on your furniture while it’s drying. If your furniture has been damp for more than about 48 hours, it’s likely you’ll deal with some mildew or mold. You’ll need to clean it off using a cloth dampened with a mild, soapy water solution. Alternatively, you can mix up some white vinegar and water, spray it on your furniture and then wipe it down.

For any of your water damage or mold remediation needs, give SERVPRO of Bellaire, Kalkaska, Lake City & Grayling a call at 231-564-4014!

Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety

Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety

Is there a beep or a chirp coming out of your smoke or carbon monoxide alarm? What does it all mean? Knowing the difference can save you, your home, and your family! Make sure that everyone in the home understands the sounds of the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and knows how to respond.

What is your alarm telling you?

Smoke Alarms

  • A continued set of three loud beeps means smoke or fire. Get out, call 9-1-1 and stay out!
  • A single "chirp" every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be changed.
  • ALL smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years.
  • Chirping that continues after the battery has been replaced means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit must be replaced.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarms

  • A continuous set of four loud beeps means carbon monoxide is present in your home. Go outside, call 9-1-1 and stay out!
  • A single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be replaced.
  • CO alarms also have "end of life" sounds that vary by manufacturer. This means it's time to get a new CO alarm.
  • Chirping that continues after the battery has been replaced means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit must be replaced.

If your Northern Michigan property has suffered water damage, you may be concerned about the potential for mold growth. Since mold spores live everywhere, it is especially important to address any wet areas after a water leak or flood. Mold spores travel through the air and attach to damp surfaces, which can lead to mold colonies if left untreated.

Important Tips to Remember About Mold Include the Following:

  • Mold can establish itself in as little as 24 to 48 hours.
  • Mold thrives in areas with high humidity, dim lighting, and low air circulation.
  • Mold can form colonies in as little as 1 to 12 days.

Mold Growth

If you suspect that mold is growing in your building, it is crucial to check areas that have sustained water damage. Whether the water is from a small, consistent leak or a major disaster, it can lead to conditions that foster mold. When the mold spores land in the correct environment, they begin feeding and breaking down materials such as wood, carpet, and fabric. This can lead to structural damage if not taken care of.

Mold Remediation

Professional cleanup and remediation services are essential to effectively handle mold growth, as experts have specialized equipment and training to detect and remediate the situation. Not only is it imperative to remove the existing mold, but it is also important to fix the source of the water feeding the mold. If the source of the water is not addressed, the mold will return and cause more damage, so this is a crucial step in mold prevention.

If you can visibly see mold or suspect it, you should call SERVPRO of Bellaire, Kalkaska, Lake City & Grayling as quickly as possible. We are always “here to help," and have the training, equipment, and expertise to take care of your mold problem. Call us today at 231-564-4014

Post Flooding Recommendations

9/30/2021 (Permalink)

Severe storm damage can lead to flooded basements and homes. The water damage that occurs when your home floods often come with odors and mold growth that continue to seep into your residence long after the water has subsided. We want to help you take care of it right away to eliminate any potential of secondary damages! You can take care to eliminate odors and preserve the safety of your dwelling with the following measures:

Air Things Out

Open all doors and windows to allow air to circulate in your residence. This should help dissipate any lingering smells that remain and will also facilitate drying of the affected areas.

Dry the Wet Areas

You may install dehumidifiers to speed up the drying process. Removing moisture from porous and absorbent surfaces such as carpet and upholstery can greatly reduce the chance of foul aromas remaining after the flood and can mitigate the appearance of mold.

Deodorize Your Home

There are natural and inexpensive methods that you can utilize to expedite the deodorizing process in your house. Baking soda sprinkled into carpets or other absorbent surfaces can be vacuumed up, greatly with getting rid of foul odors. On less porous surfaces, vinegar applied liberally can aid in combating persistent smells.

Keep an Eye Out for Mold

As with any area that has had prolonged exposure to moisture, mold growth can be a threat that, if not addressed immediately, poses a potentially recurrent problem that can present itself throughout the life span of your residence. It is imperative that proper steps are taken to ensure that mold and spores do not have the opportunity to spread in your home.

Be Aware of Contaminants

Sewage loss can lead to your home being contaminated by sewage contents when flood water finds its way past your threshold. This can leave behind an overpowering smell even after the moisture has been removed due to the bacteria in the water. These smells often cannot be removed by household cleaners and require the services of a professional flood restoration company.

Why Choose SERVPRO?

We have the training and equipment to identify and eliminate these offensive odors. By identifying the cause of the odor and determining the conditions where it contacts surfaces, the odor can often be removed over time without a trace. Our technicians have access to several odor removal products capable of penetrating surfaces to neutralize an unpleasant odor thoroughly.

The science of identifying and eliminating odors can be a tricky thing, so give us a call at 231-564-4014 and leave the restoration to us.

Standing Basement Water

9/3/2021 (Permalink)

Here to Help Standing Water Specialists

When resulting flood waters from storms enter your home or business, it can cause "standing water". Standing water is a pool of water that does not flow. This stagnant water can be a dangerous thing if it is not handled correctly, and surely a difficult task to handle if you do not have the appropriate resources. Standing water should be dealt with right away, and we are here to help with just that. The cleanup process of standing basement water can sometimes take up to 10 or 11 days to completely disappear unless it is mitigated immediately.

Here are some protective measures to take into consideration when dealing with standing basement water:

Stay Away from Standing Water

  • Sewage, debris, and other unpleasant things can be in the standing water leftovers.
  • Standing water is a breeding ground for bacteria and other parasites.
  • Standing water can lead to secondary mold damages.
  • Standing water can leave a musty odor behind in your home if not addressed immediately.
  • Swimming, wading, or rafting can make you sick.
  • Wash your hands after contact with standing water.
  • Do not drink the water.
  • Water conducts electricity. Underground power lines can give you a dangerous shock.

Standing Water vs. Animals:

  • Snakes and other animals may get into your home or building. Wear work boots and heavy gloves when you clean up.
  • Mosquitoes can breed and grow in standing water.
  • Some animals might find your home or business a cozy place to live.
  • If tap water is unsafe to drink, it is unsafe for your pets.

If you find yourself dealing with standing water of any kind, we are here to help make it “Like it never even happened."

Learn About Duct Cleaning

6/11/2021 (Permalink)

Here to Help - image of technician inspecting air duct Duct Cleaning

Since the ventilation system is often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality, inspecting the ductwork should be a high priority. In most cases, the HVAC system has been operating for some time without much attention. Dirty ducts can circulate odors, contaminants such as mold and irritating dust throughout your building or home.

A routine part of SERVPRO’s service is inspecting the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning unit (HVAC). Keeping the HVAC system and ductwork clean can potentially extend the life span of the equipment by allowing it to operate at peak condition, which may save you money.

Unlike the majority of duct cleaning services, we use a Portable Ventilation & Air Duct Cleaning System to examine ductwork and make a clean sweep, removing years of dust and grime.

Our Process:

  • The process begins by using patented equipment including a roto-scraper, which automatically adapts to the ducts’ shape and diameter while traveling through the duct, removing debris and filth before vacuuming beings.
  • Next, a powerful push-pull air delivery and collection system transfers the debris from the ducting to a 16-gallon container.
  • Air is filtered through a HEPA filtration system, removing 99.97 percent of particles in the airstream. HEPA filters capture debris and keep the environment clean.
  • As an optional process, a sealant or coating product may be sprayed to address odor or microbial concerns.
  • Filters will either be cleaned or replaced to remove odor and dirt.

We Can Help:

  • Remediate Bacteria, Fungi, and Mold
  • Reduce Potential for Mold Growth
  • Restore Peak Energy Efficiency
  • Eliminate Odors
  • Provide Free Written Inspections and Estimates

Smoke Damage

3/26/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke damage and soot caused from a fire in your home can penetrate in various cavities within your home. This can cause hidden damage and major odor if not taken care of and cleaned and deodorized by a professional restoration company. SERVPRO is experienced in smoke damage deodorization and our experienced project managers closely scope and inspect damages to accurately assess the extent of the damage in order to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts and behaviors:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

Did you know there are different types of smoke damage?  There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue following a fire in your home on Torch Lake. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Bellaire, Kalkaska, Lake City & Grayling will test the soot in your home to determine which type of smoke damage occurred has affected your home and how we can help get you back in your home. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting and our scope of work identified. Here is some additional information about smoke damage:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Deep Fryer Safety

1/4/2021 (Permalink)

According to the National Fire Protection Association, deep fryer fires cause an average of 5 deaths, 60 injuries, and more than $15 million in property damage each year. Deep fryers are great for cooking up some delicious food for gatherings, etc. But, frying is more dangerous than any other types of cooking because it involves cooking oil and grease. Not to mention, deep fryers involve larger quantities of hot cooking oil, so it creates a higher risk of injury and loss.

To avoid a fire, please follow these safety tips provided by The National Fire Protection Association:

  • Always use cooking equipment tested and approved by a recognized testing facility.
  • Follow manufacturer’s instructions and code requirements when installing and operating cooking equipment.
  • Plug cooking appliances directly into an outlet. Never use an extension cord for a cooking appliance as it can overload the circuit and cause a fire. Watch what you heat!
  • The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking. Stay in the kitchen when you are frying food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the deep fryer.
  • Do not use too much deep-frying oil. Having too much will result in excessive spillage.
  • Stay alert! To prevent cooking fires, you must be alert.
  • Keep the deep fryer clean and change cooking oil regularly.
  • Keep pets away to prevent them from knocking over the deep fryer or knocking something onto or into the deep fryer.
  • Keep anything that can catch fire – potholders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, boxes, food packaging, towels, or curtains – away from your deep fryer.

If you happen to have damage from a fryer fire, we have specialized equipment, specific training, and certifications at SERVPRO of Bellaire, Kalkaska, Lake City & Grayling that allow us to restore your home to pre-fire condition "Like it never even happened."

Winter Storm Preparation

12/17/2020 (Permalink)

During extremely cold weather or snowstorms, staying safe and warm can be a challenge. As Michiganders, we know that winter brings freezing temperatures, power failures, and icy roads. To keep you and your family safe, you need to prepare your home for Michigan’s longest season.

Prepare Your Home:

  • Insulate any water lines that run along exterior walls so your water supply will be less likely to freeze.
  • Caulk and weather-strip doors and windows.
  • Insulate walls and attic.
  • Install storm or thermal-pane windows or cover windows with plastic from the inside.
  • Repair roof leaks and cut away tree branches that could fall on your home or other structure during a storm.

By preparing your home before a storm, it could help prevent or lessen the damage. In Michigan, we never know what type of weather we will get, so it is always important to be prepared and safe rather than sorry. For these long winter months, having a plan can protect your home against storm damage.

Before the Storm Hits:

The CDC highly suggests listening and watching weather forecasts regularly to keep updated on the storm. It is also recommended to have an emergency supply kit which includes emergency food and water supply. Even though we cannot always predict how bad a winter storm can be, sometimes watching/listening to a forecast can give you several days to prepare.

Here To Help:

Cold weather and winter storms can cause significant damage with little warning resulting from cold temperatures, heavy snowfall, ice storms and freezing rain. Regardless of the type of storm, our team can handle any size disaster. During catastrophic storms and major events, our team at SERVPRO of Bellaire, Kalkaska, Lake City & Grayling can respond quickly with additional resources.

No matter the winter storm damage, our team is ready 24/7 to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Frozen Pipe Bursts

11/9/2020 (Permalink)

Why Pipe Freezing is a Problem

Freezing temperatures, especially in winter, can sometimes subject water to below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. At such low temperatures, water normally turns into a solid, thereby blocking water flow. The considerable amount of pressure that accumulates at the point of blockage due to the expanded mass of ice subjects the pipes to tensional forces that rip the pipe apart. The water accumulated upstream from the blocked area in the pipe, therefore, leaks until appropriate repairs are done. That's where SERVPRO of Bellaire, Kalkaska, Lake City & Grayling comes in. We specialize in water removal, water damage restoration, and mitigation.

Pipes that freeze most frequently are:

  • Pipes that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, and water sprinkler lines.
  • Water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.
  • Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation.

If you run into any problems with broken frozen pipes and water is pouring into your home. Give us a call and we can help you!

Commercial Air Duct Cleaning

11/2/2020 (Permalink)

Ventilation systems are often the biggest culprits in poor indoor air quality. Make it a priority to inspect the ductwork of your home or business.

According to the EPA:

You should consider having the air ducts in your home cleaned if-

  • There is substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts or on other components of your heating and cooling system.
  • There is an odd smell coming from the duct system.
  • Ducts are infested with vermin, e.g. (rodents or insects)
  • Ducts are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are released into the home from your supply registers.

Some research also suggests that cleaning dirty cooling coils, fans and heat exchangers can improve the efficiency of heating and cooling systems.

Is cleaning my air ducts really that important?

During normal operation, dust can accumulate in ductwork that can lead to microbial growth. Duct cleaning has been shown to reduce this growth, as well as increase the efficiency of your system. In fact, in some cases of extreme buildup, it can increase efficiency as much as 40 percent!

SERVPRO of Bellaire, Kalkaska, Lake City & Grayling professionals routinely inspects the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning unit (HVAC).  Keeping them clean can extend the life of the equipment. This can, in turn, save you money and give you cleaner air to breathe.

However, duct cleaning is not always necessary. We will make recommendations about the best way to address any indoor air quality concerns. This can save you money and provide peace of mind on the health of your system.

The benefits of servicing your HVAC unit include:

  • Helps to restore peak energy efficiency.
  • May help to eliminate offensive odors.
  • Helps reduce the potential for mold growth.

Residential and Commercial Fire & Smoke Damage

10/27/2020 (Permalink)

Have Questions about Fire, Smoke, or Soot Damage?

Smoke damage and soot caused from a fire in your home can penetrate in various cavities within your home.  This can cause hidden damage and odor if not taken care of and cleaned and deodorized by a professional. We are experience in smoke damage deodorization and our experience allows us to scope and inspect to accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

As a result, there are different types of soot residue following a fire in your home. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Gaylord & Cheboygan will test the soot in your home to determine which type of smoke damage occurred has affected your home and how we can help get you back in your home. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting and our scope of work identified. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different and unique, each one requires a different and tailored solution for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage. We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Create a Home Fire Escape Plan

9/17/2020 (Permalink)

Being that most of us have been at home and the fall and winter seasons are approaching quickly, spend some of that time indoors and create a fire escape plan for your household.

SERVPRO is here to help you with the after effects from a fire and we can aid in getting your home back to pre-fire condition. In life you have to expect the unexpected so take the time to create a fire plan should a fire happen to you.

There were an estimated 339,500 home structure fires in 2019 and 2,770 associated home structure fire deaths. This resulted in $7.8 billion worth of direct property damage. By creating a fire plan you can help to protect your family and allow for them to safely evacuate, which will allow for these numbers to drop.

It is noted that your ability to get out depends on advanced warning from smoke alarms and advanced planning. Fire has the ability to rapidly spread through your home, leaving you with as little as one or two minutes to escape safely once the alarm sounds. Something as simple as a closed door may help slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire.

Install smoke alarms in every room where someone sleeps and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home. It is extremely important that fire alarms are all interconnected. When one sounds, they should all sound.

Before a fire happens, get everyone in your household together and devise a fire plan. We recommend that you:

  • Draw a map of your home. Show all doors and windows.
  • Visit each room. Find two ways out.
  • All windows and doors should open easily.
    • You should also be able to use them to get outside.
  • Make sure your home has smoke alarms.
    • Push the test button to make sure each alarm is working.
  • Pick a meeting place outside. We recommend that it should be in front of your home. Everyone will meet at the meeting place following evacuation.
  • Make sure your house or building number can be seen from the street.
  • Learn the emergency phone number for your fire department.
  • Practice your home fire escape drill!

If you experience a fire don't forget to give the restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Bellaire, Kalkaska, Lake City & Grayling a call! (231) 564-4014

It is inevitable that winter brings with it frigid temperatures and extreme cold weather which can prove to be hard on both you and your home. Here are some tips to help in preparation during the fall season in order to prepare for the winter weather in Bellaire, Kalkaska, Lake City & Grayling.

High Wind Home Protection

9/17/2020 (Permalink)

Damaging winds or “straight-line” winds

These wind types can be classified as those exceeding 50-60mph. Winds of this extremity can occur during a severe thunderstorm or strong weather system. During an especially strong thunderstorm, the winds could exceed a devastating 100mph. These extreme types of winds can blow small to large objects around and cause extensive destruction to anything that lie in their path. If necessary, follow the following tips to prepare and protect yourself from wind damage.

Find shelter. Have an established location in your home that you can take cover in. These shelter locations should be away from any windows or glass doors, preferably in the middle of your home or basement. For those who are living in mobile homes, evacuation is necessary as mobile homes are susceptible to being overturned and punctured by high winds.

Protect your property. If strong winds are near or approaching, move garbage cans, outdoor furniture, grills and any other items that could be potentially dangerous if blown over into your home or garage. Vehicles should be stored in a garage and boats should be docked or tied up securely.

Power lines. High winds have the potential to lead to fallen power lines. It is extremely important to not try to free lines or remove debris – call and report them.  “Stay Away and Stay Alive.” If you witness or come across someone who may have been shocked do not try to touch them – you could also fall victim to electrocution. Call 911 and get them the right attention as quickly as possible. If for any reason a power line falls onto your car, stay inside the vehicle and do not touch any metal framing inside of your vehicle. It is important to not exit the car unless it catches on fire – if you must do so, do not step out – but rather jump out without touching any metal portions of the interior/exterior.

Driving in high speed winds. If for any reason you are driving through high speed winds, keep both hands on the wheel (wind can jerk and pull your wheel around) and immediately reduce your speed. If winds are severe enough, turn on your hazard lights, pull onto the shoulder of the road, and do not return to driving until the conditions subside.

If your home or business has experienced property damage due to high winds, make sure to call SERVPRO of Bellaire, Kalkaska, Lake City & Grayling and get our specialists on the line. 24/7 Emergency Services and board up services are available to protect your property from further damage and to prevent any secondary damages.

9/15/2020 (Permalink)

Ever wonder what SERVPRO of Bellaire, Kalkaska, Lake City & Grayling can do for your commercial business? Regardless of the disaster, we can make it “Like it never even happened.” We have the ability to mitigate damages to both commercial and residential properties.

Restoration:

  • Water Removal and Dehumidification
    • Our professionals are trained to help mitigate water damage, and to prevent and minimize secondary damage to your property. Water mitigation in conjunction with structural dehumidification can substantially reduce business interruption and reconstruction costs.
  • Fire, Smoke, and Soot
    • Pretesting helps SERVPRO determine what type of fire has taken place. Knowing the types of smoke and their behavior patterns are vital to proper restoration. After the fire trucks leave, secondary damage will have likely occurred. The act of extinguishing a fire often causes water damage far beyond the areas visibly damaged by fire and smoke. Whether you experience a water loss from flooding or a plumbing malfunction the general mitigation  process is the same, though each water damage has a unique solution.  Please feel free to click on these steps that we have listed below to learn more about the process.

Step 1 - Emergency Contact

Once you contact our office at 231-564-4014 the restoration process begins. Our representative will guide you through the first notice of loss and may ask several questions to help us better understand the equipment and resources needed to respond to your commercial water damage.

Step 2 - Inspection and Water Damage Assessment

A Project Manager or Water Damage Technician will determine the scope of your water damage at this stage. We inspect and test your commercial facility to determine the extent of the water damage and to see which areas it has affected and traveled to make sure we ensure proper mitigation and restoration.

Step 3 - Water Removal / Water Extraction

The water removal process begins almost immediately with extraction which removes the majority of the water.  Once the extraction of any standing water is completed, the necessary equipment is set including commercial fans and dehumidifiers.  We also have a variety of other commercial equipment including a trailer mounted Desiccant Dehumidifier that includes a generator when needed.  The water removal and drying out of the structure helps prevent mold growth.

Step 4 - Cleaning and Sanitizing

We clean any affected restorable items and structures damaged by the water. We have different techniques of cleaning based on the situation. Our professionals are trained to provide sanitizing treatments and to remove odors and deodorize your property.

Step 5 - Restoration

Restoration is the process of restoring your home or business to its pre-water damage condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall and installing new carpet or may entail major repairs, such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

3/26/2020 (Permalink)

Smoke damage and soot caused from a fire in your home can penetrate in various cavities within your home.  This can cause hidden damage and major odor if not taken care of and cleaned and deodorized by a professional restoration company. We are experience in smoke damage deodorization and our experienced project managers allows us to scope and inspect to accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
